How High Should a Pendant Hang?

Height is where most pendants go wrong — hung at whatever length the fixture arrived at, rather than the height the room needs. A few reliable numbers:

Over a dining table: leave roughly 75–90 cm (30–36 inches) between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade. Low enough to pool light on the table, high enough to see the person across from you.
In a walkway or open room: keep at least 2.1 m (7 feet) of clearance from the floor to the base of the pendant, so no one meets it with their forehead.
Over a kitchen island: hang the shades 75–80 cm (30–32 inches) above the counter — bright on the work surface, clear of sightlines across the room.
Beside a bed: hang so the bottom of the shade sits around 50–60 cm above the mattress, roughly where a bedside lamp would glow, so reading light falls onto the page.

When in doubt, hang a little lower than feels natural. Pendants almost always look better dropped than stranded near the ceiling.

What Size Pendant for Your Space?

Scale is the other half of the equation. Two rules of thumb cover most rooms:

For a room: add the length and width of the room in feet, and let that number, converted to inches, be a sensible diameter for a single pendant. A 12 ft × 14 ft room (26) suits a pendant around 26 inches across — or a cluster of smaller ones adding up to a similar visual weight.
For a table or island: the pendant (or the combined width of a row) should span roughly one-half to two-thirds of the surface below it. Wider looks top-heavy; much narrower looks lost.

Compact shades — anything in the 25–30 cm range — are the versatile middle: large enough to read as a deliberate choice, small enough to cluster in twos and threes without overwhelming a space.

Matching Pendant to Your Interior Style

The shape is only right if it agrees with the room it hangs in.
