How to Choose the Perfect Bedside Lamp for Your Bedroom

The bedside lamp is the most-used light in your home and the one most often chosen carelessly. Here is how to get the height, warmth and diffusion right — plus the small-nightstand trick most Indian homes miss.
The Light You Actually Use the Most
Think about how a bedroom is really used. The ceiling light gets switched on when you are looking for something. The bedside lamp gets switched on every single night — to read by, to wind down under, to find your way back to bed without flooding the room. It is, by a wide margin, the most-used light in most Indian homes, and the one most often chosen last and least carefully.
A bedside lamp is also doing something no other lamp does: it operates in the twenty minutes before sleep, when your eyes and your nervous system are at their most sensitive to light. Get it right and the bedroom feels calm and finished. Get it wrong — too bright, too cool, too tall — and you have installed a small interrogation lamp beside your pillow.
Here is what actually matters when choosing one.
The Three Jobs a Bedside Lamp Has to Do
Wind-down light. A soft, low glow that signals the end of the day. This is the job most bedside lamps fail, because they are simply too bright and too white.
Reading light. Enough usable light on a page or screen without lighting the whole room. This needs some direction — a shade that concentrates light downward and forward rather than spraying it everywhere.
Navigation light. The lamp you switch on at 2am. It should be findable in the dark and gentle enough that switching it on does not jolt you fully awake.
The best bedside lamps do all three by diffusing light through a textured surface rather than blasting it through a plain shade. A ribbed or pleated form breaks a single bulb into many soft channels of light — enough to read by, soft enough to sleep near.
Height: The Number Most People Get Wrong
This is the single most common mistake. A bedside lamp that is too tall puts the bulb and the bright underside of the shade directly in your eyeline when you are sitting up in bed. A lamp that is too short disappears behind the nightstand and lights nothing useful.
The rule that works: when you are sitting up in bed, the bottom of the shade should sit at roughly your eye level or just below — close to your shoulder-to-chin height.
In practical numbers for a typical Indian bedroom:
- Most nightstands are 55–65 cm tall.
- On a nightstand that height, a lamp of roughly 28–35 cm tall lands the shade correctly for most people.
- If your bed is unusually low (a platform or floor bed), drop to a 25–30 cm lamp.
- If your nightstand is low or you sleep on a high mattress, go taller — or hang a pendant instead (more on that below).
Nervura Table Lamp — ₹1,499 · Sixty vertical ribs in a compact 23 × 23 × 30 cm mushroom form — exactly the height that lands the shade at seated eye level. Diffuses a soft, even glow through the ribbing, and comes in Warm Amber, Soft White or Midnight Blue. Warm-white LED included. Shop Now →
Warm Light, Always
If you take one thing from this guide: bedside light should be warm. Cool white and daylight bulbs (anything above roughly 4000K) render a bedroom flat and clinical, and blue-weighted light late in the evening is the least helpful thing you can put next to a bed.
Look for warm white, around 2700K. It is the colour of light just after sunset — the tone your body reads as "the day is ending." It also does something practical: warm light makes textured, sculptural shades look far better, because the shadows it casts are soft and golden rather than grey and hard.
Every Lorenova lamp ships with a warm-white LED already matched to its shade, so there is no guessing in the bulb aisle.
If You Read in Bed
Readers need more than mood. You want light that reaches the page without lighting your partner's face.
Look for a shade that is more closed at the top and open at the base, so light falls downward into your lap rather than outward across the bed. A taller, tapered form does this naturally. Place the lamp slightly forward on the nightstand — closer to the head of the bed than the wall — so the pool of light lands where the book actually is.
Aurelia Ribbed Tripod Table Lamp — ₹1,799 · A ribbed shade raised on a slim tripod base, lifting the light to a comfortable reading height while keeping the footprint small. The vertical ribbing softens the output so the page is lit without glare. Shop Now →
For a softer, more ambient bedroom — where the lamp is there to fill the room gently rather than light a page — a wave-form shade throws a wider, more diffuse field of light.
Ondula Table Lamp — ₹2,599 · A stacked column of undulating ribs that scatters light in every direction for a soft, sourceless room fill. Ideal when your bedside lamp is the only light you want on in the evening. Shop Now →
Small Nightstand? Hang the Light Instead
The most underused bedroom lighting trick in Indian homes: if your nightstand is small — and in most apartments it is — stop putting the lamp on it. Hang a compact pendant beside the bed instead.
You gain the entire surface back for a book, a phone, a glass of water. You gain symmetry, because a matched pair on either side reads far more considered than two table lamps. And because a hanging light sits above the clutter, the bedroom instantly looks tidier.
Hang so the bottom of the shade sits roughly 50–60 cm above the mattress — about where a bedside lamp's shade would glow — and keep it a little away from the bed edge so you do not knock it getting up.
Petal Pendant Light — ₹3,990 · Layered white petals that diffuse a gentle, low glow — soft enough to sit beside at night, and hung in a pair it frees both nightstands completely. A 30 cm shade that reads as sculpture by day. Shop Now →

Buy the Pair
One bedside lamp lights a bed. Two make a bedroom look designed.
A matched pair on either side of the bed creates the symmetry that reads as "finished" in photographs and in person — and it is genuinely practical when two people go to bed at different times. If a matched pair is not in budget, the next best thing is two lamps of the same height and the same light colour in different forms; the eye forgives a difference in shape far more easily than a difference in scale or colour temperature.
A Short Checklist
Before you buy, run through this:
- Height: shade bottom near seated eye level — usually a 28–35 cm lamp on a standard nightstand.
- Colour: warm white, around 2700K. Never daylight.
- Diffusion: a textured, ribbed or pleated shade, not a bare bulb or a hard reflector.
- Footprint: leave room for a book and a glass — or hang the light and keep the whole surface.
- Switch: make sure you can find and reach it lying down.
- Symmetry: buy two if you can.
